7 things to look out for when purchasing a pre-owned vehicle

Choosing the right automobile can be a daunting task especially if you are settling for a preowned vehicle. Getting it wrong could cost you months of misery spent at repair shops and unforeseen breakdowns on the roads. However, purchasing a used vehicle can be a great way to be mobile without breaking the bank. If you take into consideration these important points, you are sure to achieve low cost and high quality when purchasing a vehicle

  1. CHECK OUT THE VEHICLE HISTORY

You can elicit information on details like - if the car has ever been involved in an accident, if there are any recalls on the model, etc by running research on the vehicle. There are websites that allow you do this check using the vehicle’s VIN - vehicle identification number. You can also request historical information on the vehicle from the current owner

  1. LOOK OUT FOR RUST OR PAINT DAMAGE

When inspecting, check metals under the vehicle and around the edges for rusty spots or paint chips. Small rust patches can easily be fixed. However, large rust patches on metal are not a good sign hence such vehicles should be reconsidered for purchase.

  1. WHAT’S THE MILEAGE?

On average, vehicles will run 20,000 km annually. A good way to determine if a vehicle has a great mileage is to divide the number on the odometer by the vehicle’s age. A car with high mileage will have more wear and tear on its mechanical components. It is a good idea for you to make more research about why high mileage matters when buying a used car.

  1. FRAME AND HOOD

The frame of the vehicle is another important factor. Look out for problems with the frame. Pay attention to the bumpers, trunk and hoods. Look out for warping. Check that the vehicle is sitting at a parallel level to the ground. Check that nothing is hanging from the undercarriage.

Furthermore, the engine is a very critical part of the vehicle. While the engine is on, look out for strange or knocking sounds. While turned off, visually inspect the engine for any form of corrosion, fluid leaks, cracked hoses and belts. Also, inspect the oil and transmission dipsticks for discoloration as the engine oil should be light brown. Transmission fluid should be pink or red.

  1. UPHOLSTERY AND INTERIOR ELECTRONICS

Look out for loose seams beyond repair and worn-out leather. Press some buttons to ensure that the stereo and other electronic components working properly. Turn on the air conditioning and heater as well to verify functionality.

  1. TIRE CONDITION

Verify that the tire thread all match and are evenly worn. Poor alignment due to uneven thread or worn tyres can be a symptom of steering, suspension or frame issues.

  1. HAVE A REGISTERED AUTO-MECHANIC COMPLETE A PRE-PURCHASE INSPECTION
